Joe Biden Shares How He Has Dealt With Stuttering

In a recent town hall meeting U.S. Presidential Candidate Joe Biden opens up about his history with stuttering.  While this isn't the first time he's opened up about this, it is however, now more in the limelight given his presidential candidacy.

If you stutter or stammer and believe in your heart that you have greatness within, what advice does Joe Biden have for you?

Here are three major points Biden makes in his response I believe are worth highlighting.

1. He still struggles with his speech from time to time, but that doesn't or hasn't defined him, he knows why and it's okay.

The CNN article says the following: Biden said at a CNN town hall Wednesday he "still occasionally, when I find myself really tired," catches himself stuttering.

"It has nothing to do with your intelligence quotient. It has nothing to do with your intellectual makeup," Biden said.

Biden also said to tell Joey not to let stuttering define him.

Everyone has disfluencies from time to time.  This is normal.  The difference is, most people who don't stutter, pay their own disfluencies no attention.  It doesn't bother them, so it flys beneath their mental radar.  This fact keeps the person from focusing on their disfluencies and therefore prevents them from defining themselves as stutterers.

Alternatively, people who see themselves stutterers often anticipate, focus on and beat themselves up about their speech.  It defines them, haunts them and usually makes life a lot more difficult in certain situations, such as introducing themselves, ordering food or coffee, answering the phone, etc.

Biden also said that when he gets really tired he may catch himself stuttering.  This is a signal that hey, I need to get some rest, I'm really tired.  However, he doesn't let this define him.

2. Biden also said that his success with dealing with stuttering is in part to being confident.  The article says, "He [Biden] said he thinks "part of it's confidence".

As a person who stuttered and sometime severely for more than 25 years (closer to 30) and as professional who helps others overcome their struggles with speech, I have see that when one feels and is confident, they have a tendency to feel more relaxed and speak more smoothly.  While this is not the case 100% of the time, it is true more often than not. We discuss this and show how to build confidence here.

3. One of, and in my opinion, the most important factors that can help someone who struggles with stuttering is learning to slow down.  Biden says in the article this: "he has to 'think in terms of not rushing.'"
While slowing down and not rushing isn't the only strategy, let me tell you, it is a very important one.

In fact, I've found that in the vast majority of my clients and students, of which there are thousands, learning to relax and slow down results in 80% or more of their speaking success.  Here's a recent video training I did on this exact subject...

The article goes on to share much more of his advice to a Pastor who asked what advice would Biden would give to a student who stuttered.  Here's a link to the article:

And, here's the YouTube video:

In conclusion, if you stutter, stammer or otherwise struggle with your speech, you can still realize your potential.  Many thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of people have done it and are doing it right now.

Not only that, you can, because of your struggles, become one of the better speakers around.  Why?  Because you have to do work that most others don't.

If you choose to view your speech struggles as an opportunity, you can turn what may now be a liability into one of your greatest assets.  I know because I've helped many, many people do just that. Here's one such example: Dr. Ismail Bhorat
